What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster in Virginia
A clear list of what's allowed and what's banned from a roll-off dumpster under Virginia rules, plus where the banned items should actually go instead.
Most household and renovation debris is fine in a standard roll-off dumpster. A short list of materials is restricted from ordinary landfill disposal under Virginia rules, and it's worth knowing before you start loading.
Generally fine to load
Furniture, mattresses, carpet and padding, cabinets, drywall, flooring, general household junk, non-hazardous construction debris, roofing shingles, and yard debris are all standard mixed-load items.
Banned from a standard load

A quick note on paint
Wet or liquid paint can't go in the dumpster, but fully dried, solid latex paint can. If you have several old cans, letting them dry out completely (kitty litter or a commercial paint hardener speeds it up) before disposal is the easiest path.
