The City of Fairfax is another of Virginia's independent cities -- a compact, historic city government completely separate from the much larger Fairfax County that surrounds it and shares its name (a common point of confusion; the two are entirely different governments). It has its own elected City Council, Mayor and City Manager, its own police department, and a historic Old Town core of its own around Fairfax Courthouse.
