Do You Need a Dumpster Permit in Alexandria, VA?

The short answer: if the container sits on your own driveway or private property, you don't need a permit anywhere we deliver. Permits come into play only when a container has to sit on a public street or right-of-way.

Private property: no permit needed

A driveway, a backyard, a private lot, or a construction site on private land doesn't require a placement permit in any jurisdiction we serve. This covers the large majority of our residential deliveries.

Public street placement: check with the city or county

If your property has no driveway — common on some of Old Town's older, tighter blocks — and the container needs to sit at the curb instead, a temporary right-of-way permit may be required. For an address inside Alexandria's own city limits, that's the City of Alexandria's own permitting office. Outside Alexandria, each jurisdiction we serve — Arlington County, Falls Church, Fairfax City, or Fairfax County for the unincorporated communities — handles its own right-of-way permitting separately, since Virginia's local-government structure genuinely varies across our service area.

A quick jurisdiction note

Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax City are each an independent city under Virginia law, with no county government above them. Arlington is its own county with no incorporated towns inside it. The rest of our service area sits in unincorporated Fairfax County. None of that changes whether a driveway placement needs a permit — it never does — but it does change which office to call for a street placement.
