What to expect getting a dumpster after a Northern Virginia storm system — hurricane remnants, derechos and coastal nor'easters — and how to size the cleanup.
Alexandria doesn't take a direct hurricane hit often, but the remnants of landfalling tropical systems, summer derechos and fall/winter nor'easters all bring real storm debris to Northern Virginia most years — downed limbs, damaged fencing, and occasionally roof and siding damage from high wind.
What storm debris typically looks like here
Downed tree limbs and brush make up most of it, along with damaged fencing, decking, and sometimes wind-lifted roofing material. After a wet system, all of it weighs more than it looks — waterlogged brush and shingles are heavier per cubic foot than dry material, which matters for sizing.

During an active storm stretch

Never approach debris that's near a downed power line. Wait for the utility company to confirm the area is safe before clearing anything close to it.
